Psoriasis: Causes, symptoms, and treatment

Ψωρίαση: Από τι προκαλείται, συμπτώματα και αντιμετώπιση
What is psoriasis?

Psoriasis is a common, chronic inflammatory skin disease which affects approximately 2% of the global population on average. It should be noted that psoriasis is not contagious, and what it causes is an excessive multiplication of our skin cells in the upper layer of the epidermis. What exactly does this mean? Our skin cells normally renew approximately every 30 days, whereas in people affected by psoriasis, renewal happens within 4-6 days. This sudden and rapid multiplication of skin cells results in an accumulation of cells in the upper layers of the skin, creating the so-called psoriatic "plaques".

The inflammation is caused by immune system cells that accumulate via the bloodstream in certain areas of the skin. The main reason for its appearance is the overstimulation of the immune system due to genetic and environmental factors. In short, psoriasis is primarily an immune-related disease and is not caused by an infection from bacteria, virus, fungus, or parasite.

Generally, it has been observed to affect Caucasians more frequently compared to Africans and Asians, while it does not discriminate between genders and affects both men and women equally. Regarding age, psoriasis is more common during the 3rd and 4th decades of life, but it is also seen in older ages as well as in younger individuals such as 10 years old or younger.

Symptoms

Although symptoms can vary between patients, the main symptoms of plaque psoriasis are as follows:

  1. Itching, sensitivity, or burning sensation

  2. Red skin patches covered with silvery scales

  3. Dry, cracked skin that may bleed

Nevertheless, it should be mentioned here that the effects of psoriasis can be much more generalized and extend beyond a simple skin condition. We must not ignore the psychological impact it can have on the individual. For example, the person's lifestyle and quality of life can be greatly affected due to the intense itching and pain caused by the plaques. Also, the emotional management of psoriasis by the patient is difficult, as they often face myths circulating and adopted by a large part of the population, and frequently must explain their condition.

Treatment

Psoriasis is a chronic condition that requires individualized, long-term monitoring and cooperation with the treating physician, as well as long-term therapeutic management. Treatment of psoriasis depends on many factors such as the extent, severity, and if the patient has other health problems, etc. Regarding medications, there are 3 general categories for therapeutic management of psoriasis which are:

  • Systemic therapy (administration of medications either by injection or orally)

  • Topical therapy (local application of medications on the skin)

  • Phototherapy (treatment using ultraviolet radiation)
