The simple elastic shin guard helps to heal the calf from an injury or bruise. It can also be worn preventively, protecting them from any injury. A calf sprain is a relatively common injury to the gastrocnemius muscle. It usually occurs during athletic activity, when the muscle contracts abruptly while it was in a state of relaxation. It most often occurs in sports such as football, basketball, tennis and track and field (e.g. sprinting or jumping).
Calf sprains, depending on their severity, are divided into three degrees. In the first and second degrees, there is a partial rupture of the calf muscle fibers, while in the third degree, the rupture involves all muscle fibers. The main symptom of a calf (calf) sprain is sudden pain or a pulling sensation in the back of the leg during activity. Depending on the degree of the sprain, the person may continue their activity or may need help to withdraw. Edema (swelling) then develops in the area and mobility is limited. Whenever the calf muscle is loaded (e.g. running, walking, rising on tiptoes, stairs, etc.), there is sensitivity and pain during movements, while if a hematoma develops, bruises also appear.
How is a calf sprain treated?
Treatment depends on the severity of the calf sprain. For minor sprains, treatment is conservative and includes:
- Elastic bandage – Rest
- Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs
- Ice packs in the first few days
- Physiotherapy
