Taurine is one of the best-known sulfated amino acids, and can be synthesized in the body from Cysteine with the synergistic action of Vitamin B6. It plays an important role in the normal function of the brain, heart, gallbladder, eyes and vascular system. Taurine has many different biological functions, acting as a neurotransmitter in the brain, as a stabilizer of cell membranes and as a mediator in the transport of ions such as sodium, potassium, calcium and magnesium. Taurine, after GABA, is the second most important inhibitory neurotransmitter in the brain. The amino acids alanine, glutamic acid and pantothenic acid inhibit the metabolism of taurine, while Vitamins A and B6, zinc and manganese contribute to the synthesis of taurine. Cysteine and Vitamin B6 are the components most directly involved in the synthesis of taurine. The gallbladder uses taurine to form taurocholic acid, one of the two bile acids required for the breakdown of fat in the small intestine. Taurine is also involved in the excretion of cholesterol and bilirubin in the bile. High alcohol intake increases taurine losses. It is often low in those who do not consume dairy and meat products and in vegetarians as well. It is one of the main ingredients in popular energy drinks, although there is little evidence to support this use.
