The trace mineral selenium is an essential dietary component, essential for the performance of important biological processes in the body, such as reproduction, the synthesis of thyroid hormones, DNA synthesis, immune function and defense against inflammation and oxidative stress. Selenium intake, as well as its levels in the plasma, vary depending on the population, the composition and selenium content of the soil, and the type and quantity of food. Foods rich in selenium are Brazil nuts, organ meats, poultry, fish, dairy products, bread and cereals. Selenium has antioxidant, immunomodulatory and anti-inflammatory effects, while it is an essential element for the synthesis and metabolism of thyroid hormones. These actions are implemented through the selenoproteins of which it is a basic component. The main selenoproteins are glutathione peroxidase (GPx), which due to its antioxidant activity protects thyroid cells from excess H2O2 produced during the synthesis of thyroid hormones, and deiodinases that contribute to the deiodination (removal of an iodine atom) of thyroxine, resulting in the production of metabolically active triiodothyronine. The thyroid gland is the organ with the highest selenium content. Recent epidemiological studies have found that low levels of selenium in plasma are associated with a higher incidence of goiter, thyroid nodules and immune thyroid diseases such as Graves' disease and Hashimoto's thyroiditis. Therefore, selenium deficiency is a risk factor for morphological and functional thyroid disorders. Selenium administration to patients with autoimmune thyroiditis (Hashimoto) with or without thyroxine treatment appears to modify the characteristic inflammatory and immunological reactions of the disease as seen over time by the decline in antithyroid antibodies. Additionally, selenium supplementation can improve thyroid echostructure. Selenium supplementation in euthyroid patients with Graves' disease and concomitant mild ophthalmopathy results in improved quality of life, reduced severity of ophthalmopathy and slowed progression, and is included in the official treatment guidelines of the European Graves' Ophthalmology Group. The effect of selenium is also evident in pregnancy, where in addition to the decrease in antibodies, there is a delay in disease progression, an improvement in the thyroid ultrasound image, and a reduction in the rate of postpartum thyroid dysfunction and the occurrence of permanent hypothyroidism. According to the results of studies conducted in Greece, the average daily selenium intake and its average serum concentration are lower than the desired limits. For orders that do not exceed 3kg of volumetric weight*, the shipping cost is €3.00 when the order is under €50. For orders over this amount, shipping is free!
For orders over 3kg of volumetric weight*, there is an additional charge of €2.30 per extra kilogram.
If the chosen payment method is cash on delivery, there is an additional fee of €2.50.

Shipping costs are calculated as follows:

  • €4.30 for a medium locker (dimensions 17x45x62cm, up to 4kg)

  • €6.90 for a large locker (dimensions 35x45x62cm, up to 7kg)

For orders over €150, shipping is free.

    The parcel remains in the locker for 48 hours, with the possibility to extend for an additional 24 hours upon user request.

    Orders are shipped via DHL Courier. Shipping costs are calculated based on the destination zone and product weight. You will be notified via email of the final shipping cost.
    Prepayment via bank transfer or card is required for order shipment.

    Orders marked as “Pickup from store” are available after confirmation, provided all products are in stock. You will receive an SMS notification when your order is ready.
